Woman charged for withdrawing Sh110K sent to her account by mistake

A woman has been charged for withdrawing money that was erroneously deposited into her account.

Faith Mutiwa Mutumbi, 30, was presented at the Kakamega law courts where she denied the charges of stealing Sh110,000 and handling stolen goods by dishonestly receiving the money deposited in her Family Bank account domiciled at Mlolongo branch.

The offences are said to have been committed on diverse dates between September 11, 2023, and September 19, 2023, with the culprit knowing the monies to be stolen. Principal Magistrate James Masiga granted Mutumbi a Sh100,000 bond with a surety of the same amount.

The matter will be mentioned on April 29 and a hearing on July 15.

Five witnesses are set to testify in the matter. Moraa Atandi, the prosecutor, urged the court to grant the accused a steep bond because she was from Makueni and was a flight risk.

“Regarding the nature of the offence, the accused should be granted a steep bond. She is a flight risk too,” Atandi said.

The prosecutor told the court that the police report indicated that the money was erroneously deposited to Mutumbi’s account by the Jubilee Iron Mongers Limited’s Kakamega supervisor who frequently deposited to the account on behalf Erdermann Property Limited.

“The supervisor initiated the deposit with an error in accounts being noted long after the transaction,” said Atandi. “Family Bank, through Wycliffe Kamau, the head of security and investigations, raised a complaint involving an erroneous cash deposit of Sh110,000 to the bank’s account belonging to the accused. The funds were intended to credit Family Bank account numbers belonging to Erdermann Properties Limited,” she said.

Atandi also told the court that the bank tried to call the accused through her to come and record her statements but she declined.

“She declined to record her statement but she indicated that she didn’t know that the money belonged to someone else and thought that she had been blessed by the bank,” said Atandi.
